Why should you donate to HeartLine?

The first time we spoke with Mark, he thought it would be the last time he spoke to anyone. Overwhelmed by a series of painful traumas and recent disappointments, Mark thought all he needed now was to figure out a way to end it all.

Over the course of two days, he spoke to three different Call Specialists, each one concerned that he wouldn’t be able to keep safe. The third scheduled him for a follow-up with me, HeartLine's Director of Suicide Prevention & Outreach. Upon follow-up, Mark informed me that he had lost his job. Being familiar with his plight from the contact notes our Call Specialists saved, I feared the worst. “I’ve just got to come up with a plan now.” He said.

Thinking that he meant a plan for suicide, I asked, “What do you mean when you say you need to figure out your plan?”

Probably sensing that I was about to begin a risk assessment, Mark corrected me, “No, no, not like that. I mean I need to figure out what I’m going to do to get another job. I’m really upset right now, but I know I have options. Talking to your people last week really made me realize that while life is tough, the future looks brighter than the past. I know if I go the other way, if I kill myself, I wouldn’t have any options… and that’s not the path for me.”

Mark made it through the worst few days of his life by relying on our Call Specialists and then, in the next week, when he suffered yet another loss, he was able to face it with his head held high. Through our compassionate support, he grew stronger, and in recognizing his own strength, he grew empowered to live through life’s hardships. This is exactly the goal of the work we do at HeartLine.

Not everyone can be a HeartLine Call Specialist, but everyone can make a difference. Make a difference for Oklahomans in need by donating to HeartLine 2-1-1!

What is HeartLine?

As Oklahoma’s suicide-prevention experts and 24-hour crisis contact center, HeartLine leads the charge in operating a comprehensive support system. We are structured to effectively bring resources and compassionate, nonjudgmental support to Oklahomans in need and to prevent suicide in our communities. Our work focuses on compassionate listening, connecting those in need to important resources, crisis intervention and suicide prevention. These objectives lead to individuals and families who are able to improve the quality of their own lives.

What is 2-1-1?

As the largest program of HeartLine, 2-1-1 is a free, 24-hour phone service that provides Oklahomans access to information about health and human services. Highly trained 2-1-1 call specialists offer compassionate engagement and can make in-depth assessments and referral plans based on eligibility requirements for each program. We work with our callers to make a plan using our 2-1-1 database – the most comprehensive entity of its kind in the state, with more than 13,000 services available – that improves the quality of their families’ lives. We offer help in more than 200 languages and provide the public with a place to turn for nonemergency needs during times of disaster.

2-1-1 can connect Oklahomans to a variety of services such as:

    - Housing/utility assistance
    - Food
    - Clothes
    - Legal
    - Health care/mental health care
    - Individual, family & community support
    - Crisis intervention

Who does HeartLine 2-1-1 serve?

HeartLine 2-1-1 answers 2-1-1 for 40 counties in Western and Central Oklahoma. Any Oklahoman in need can call 2-1-1 for access to health and human services.

At a recent community outreach event, HeartLine staff met a gentleman who shared that he had called 2-1-1 last year after having been diagnosed with lung cancer. He said that it had been the “final straw” in a year of horrible events and he didn’t know what to do or where to go for support. He said that the call specialist he spoke to “gave me an ear when the world was crumbling down around me. They reminded me that there is nothing I can’t do. They gave me hope when I had nothing.”

How will my donation help?

With your support, HeartLine can continue to connect Oklahomans to help, hope and information - 24 hours a day. With 1 in 5 households in Oklahoma utilizing 2-1-1, your gift will support more than 200,000 Oklahomans in 2016 alone!
