Who is HeartLine 2-1-1?
HeartLine's roots stem from the LifeLine telephone ministry, which originated in Sydney, Australia, in 1963 and grew to a worldwide movement by 1966. In 1967, the program arrived in the United States under the name CONTACT. By the mid-seventies, CONTACT centers were the largest provider of telephone helpline and crisis intervention services in the country. In 1971, through the hard work and dedication of the mental health and faith communities of central Oklahoma, the Oklahoma City CONTACT Center was opened. In its first year, 100 volunteers were trained, and 8,200 calls were answered. On January 1st, 2005, the organization was renamed HeartLine and charged with a new, broader mission: Connecting Oklahomans with help, hope, and information 24 hours a day. In the 2014/2015 fiscal year, HeartLine served a staggering 201,880 Oklahomans in need.
What is 2-1-1?
2-1-1 is a free, 24-hour phone service that provides Oklahomans access to information about health and human services simply by dialing 2-1-1.
Many things can happen in someone’s life to leave them in crisis: loss of job, abuse at home, mental health, bills higher than earnings, and more. When someone contacts 2-1-1, we can offer resources and support they need to get back on their feet. 2-1-1 enhances quality of life and economic well-being in the Oklahoma community by helping individuals obtain employment, meet urgent needs, access health services, and improve living situations.
2-1-1 can connect Oklahomans to a variety of services such as:
- Housing/Utility Assistance
- Food/Meals
- Clothes
- Legal
- Health Care/Mental Health Care
- Individual, Family & Community Support
- Crisis Intervention
Who does HeartLine 2-1-1 serve?
HeartLine 2-1-1 answers 2-1-1 for 40 counties in Western and Central Oklahoma. Any Oklahoman in need can call 2-1-1 for access to health and human services.
At a recent community outreach event, HeartLine staff met a gentleman who shared that he had called 2-1-1 last year after having been diagnosed with lung cancer. He said that it had been the “final straw” in a year of horrible events and he didn’t know what to do or where to go for support. He said that the Call Specialist he spoke to “gave me an ear when the world was crumbling down around me. They reminded me that there is nothing I can’t do. They gave me hope when I had nothing.”
